Merlin introduced himself to Team 4 of Series 1 as Bert. (Potentially confusing, as he'd just been summoned by the arrangement of blocks to depict a letter M.) He claimed that "high sorcerers" such as himself may use multiple names (which might help to explain the calling name system used in later series). Bert hinted that the use of a lowlier name made him better suited to performing low level magic such as "boiling the perfect egg", although he contradicted this moments later by handing out "hiiigh magic" (ENERGY) as part of a record-setting three spell giveaway.

During his meeting with Team 7 of Series 2, Merlin mentioned Bert as being the name his close friends called him.
