An incantation jokingly alluded to in the gamebook section of
The Labyrinths of Fear. If the player visits
Merlin's library in
Level 3, he requests help with carrying a hefty tome over to his desk; "
There is an unlit lantern there, but Merlin says something about a car and a bar of soap that causes it to light up." The player is assumed to be unfamiliar with
Latin, thinking of the Fiat and Lux brands rather than understanding the phrase to mean "
Let there be light".
The following year, "Fiat Lux" appeared as a magic
spell in the first series of
Le Chevalier du Labyrinthe - one of three gifted to a
team by the sorcerer Tarok after they correctly answered his question. When later faced with a
darkened clue room, they eventually realised they needed to use magic, and after first trying the spell "
Sesame" to no effect, they managed to illuminate the room using "Fiat Lux" (equivalent to
Knightmare's
FLARE and
LANTERN).
