A weapon consisting of a spiked metal ball linked to a handle by a chain. Deriving their name from the action of the ball, flails were in common use in 13th-15th century Europe, though knights tended by far to prefer 
swords, which were far less unwieldy (as well as being better status symbols).
Merlin's "equipment and supplies" stall during the quest of 
Team 2 of Series 4 had a heavy flail on offer. He claimed it had been used in battle by Sir Cuthbert the Unsteady, a nickname which reflects the clumsiness of the flail, and which put the 
team off buying it.
