20:17:12 Pooka Well isn't this fun?
20:20:01 Workaholic has joined the room
20:20:10 Pooka Boo
20:20:28 *Workaholic is already too busy to answer
20:20:44 *Pooka stares at KaM in shocked disbelief
20:21:06 Pooka We're what - four weeks into our freshers year and you're already working that hard?
20:21:07 Workaholic :) Hiya.
20:21:23 Workaholic Meh.. took me fortnight and I was in full swing
20:21:35 Workaholic Nose at the grindstone at the moment.
20:22:12 Pooka Hmmm. I just had to read stuff this weekend.
20:22:24 Workaholic Only 5 more sonnets and 8 elegies to work on tonight.. an essay for Friday, and I might want to think about learning some vocab for the latin test on Tuesday.
20:22:36 Workaholic Oh, and the adjective grammar sheet we need to know inside out
20:22:43 Pooka You have to write sonnets or study them?
20:24:01 KaM Oh, study.. study.. Rossetti, GM Hopkins, Brooke, Shelley and Seamus Heaney
20:24:20 Pooka Have you got the Paterson 101 Sonnets book? That's what we're working from.]
20:24:35 KaM Elegies are Gray, Milton (ARGH!), Jonson, Shelley (again), Yeats, Auden and Geoffrey Hill
20:25:12 KaM No; the Norton Anthology of English Literature.. volume 7.. both parts.. both around 3000 pages
20:25:29 KaM It's just sonnets and elegies this week.. need to cover all poetry by Xmas
20:25:56 KaM Did Introductions on the first week; with beginnings, authenticity etc.
20:26:08 Pooka Ah - we had to write our own sonnet for ahomework last week, and comment upon it
20:26:39 KaM Second week has been a look at Pastoral and Politics & History within poetry.
20:27:19 Pooka More of a social commentary spin put on your course, then.
20:27:27 KaM Aww.. wish we could do that. Oh no.. lots of reading for seminars.. a nice essay for Friday, which the tutor expects to be really good, because our seminar group of 6, with the exception of moi, are very good at English
20:27:44 KaM Just.. very broad, sir.
20:28:34 KaM But yes.. expected to look at the historical analysis especially.. putting all into social, historical and political contexts
20:28:55 KaM Some of it is great stuff... some of it dense as anything. One or two of the elegies to come fall under the latter category
20:29:50 Pooka We have 2 modules.
20:30:08 Pooka "Introduction to Literary Studies I" is more of an analytical piece of work 1 book per week.
20:30:09 KaM This year or term?
20:30:13 Pooka All year.
20:30:22 KaM Nods. Same
20:30:31 Pooka So far we've looked at Beowulf, and Hamlet.
20:31:04 Pooka Then "Arguing About English" (my favourite) is the one we produce creative writing for, and... argue about it ^_^
20:31:43 KaM We all take 'Introductions to Poetry' - and I miss the part called 'critical issues' - which all single honours have to do. That is, I assume, looking at the real bugger of works.. Paradise Lost, The Faerie Queen etc
20:31:51 *Pooka grins mischeivously. It's the one I look forward to, Arguing About English.
20:32:38 KaM Taking latin as well, we just do the core English, which covers all grounds anyway. Next semester is a good choice. Joint honours can avoid the standard 'Approaches to Shakespeare'
20:32:44 Pooka Paradise Lost and The Faerie Queene are classics though.
20:33:13 Pooka Avoid Shakespeare at all costs, unless they're doing any of his better works, eg, Macbeth, Comedy of Errors.
20:33:37 KaM GREAT! So.. 'contemporary writing' or 'Mediaeval english' hmm.. Hard choice - still ..not one needed to be made until New Year anyhow.
20:34:08 Pooka I say contemporary - not that it's my choice though, sir!
20:34:42 KaM Oh, yessir, I intend to. Not the keenest on old Bill, I'm afriad. King Lear is my favourite; Macbeth, I somewhat liked... but as for the others I've looked upon, not my fav. artist by any means.
20:34:50 Pooka I have no choice over my English modules u.u but I did have a choice over which subsidiary to take - settling on mediaeval history..
20:35:24 KaM I think it's right that all English degrees shouldn't have compulsory Shakespeare; I mean, the guy isn't the root of all literature.
20:35:29 Pooka Me likey Shakespear but only Macbeth and Comedy stood out for me. Romeo and Juliet was a bit too, uh, chick-flick. And Hamlet bored me to bits.,
20:36:01 KaM Hamlet, Richard II, As You Like It, Cymbeline.. Argh!! Meh
20:36:02 Pooka Yes, but in some cases he is, you don't put them on a desert island with 8 records, the Bible and the complete works of Joe Bloggs. ^_^
20:36:35 Pooka Most of his tragical histories are trite - in fact, nearly all the Kingsm, except Lear (and maybe John)
20:37:29 *Pooka changed the topic to ||||||||||| Knightmare Chat: Saturday & Sunday 8pm - http://www.knightmare.com - Ha! Goneril with a white beard!|||||||||||
20:37:53 KaM Aye, maybe. Just think there's more to English than white beards.. What!?
20:38:00 Pooka What what?
20:38:19 *KaM whispers - you got it wrong, sir... sure it's Regan
20:38:30 Pooka It's Goneril... :p
20:38:58 Pooka http://home.pacific.net.au/~greg.hub/contexts.html
20:39:01 KaM Regan! That's why she's the sexy one.. all the men croon after the bard! (ahem.. beard)
20:39:40 Pooka It's still Goneril. Regan's the sexy one though, I don't find beards a turn-on, myself!
20:39:56 KaM Ack.. bows down to Pooka's knowledge.
20:40:14 KaM Although not remembering the text that well, I didn't think you were being wholly serious
20:40:41 KaM Goneril is the Icy one. The Anne Robinson of Shakespeare.
20:40:49 Pooka Hehe, not that I'm a boff or anything, it's just my family have a pecualiar fixation with that singular quote; it's the one thing of theirs I wanna carry on. ^_^
20:41:11 Pooka "Dad, you've gone insane, you are the weakest monarch, fgoodbye."
20:41:44 KaM Oh, thinking of Anne Robinson, we had the Rt Hon Anne Widdecombe MP and family at our formal hall meal on Friday eve. I didn't get to go, which is a shame.
20:42:00 Pooka Why? Would you have wanted to throw things?
20:42:55 KaM Hehe.. 'Lear - what do you do for a living? Hmm.. you're one throne shy of a kingship! You are the weakest kin'k', be banished!'
20:43:20 Pooka ^_^
20:43:25 KaM No, not really. She was supposedly really great, so said all the lads from I block who spoke to her. Grand
20:44:04 KaM Besides, I'm a lib dem. I don't have political despisings for anyone.. or non-political for that matter. :)
20:44:40 Pooka I really don't like her. I'm a Socialist, so a Lib Dem supporter really.
20:45:32 KaM Well, I owe the conservatives for the assisted places scheme that got me here in the long and short of it.
20:47:01 Pooka What scheme?
20:47:33 KaM But I do believe the whole political stability is not good. I know it doesn't take a genius to see that; but the Lib Dems have a great chance of capitalising while Labour are under scrutiny and the Conservatives have done little to bolster their flagging popularity.
20:47:50 Pooka Lib Dems are the strongest, most united party.
20:48:00 KaM Assisted Places scheme.. scholarships to Grammar schools etc. etc.
20:48:57 Pooka Ah right. But we all owe Labour for the NHS, and we owe New Labour for the decline in the NHS in recent years!
20:49:35 LordFear has joined the room
20:49:51 LordFear Greetings
20:50:04 KaM We did owe labour for establishing the vital economic link between inflation and interest rates; which Gordon Brown had been doing extremely well. However, the house price inflation has been instrumental in ruining this completely.
20:50:16 KaM Heya mate. Bang right into politics. :)
20:50:35 LordFear Oh good, my favourite subject for discussion on a Sunday evening
20:50:35 Pooka New Labour just mess things up, really.
20:51:17 KaM Manufacturing sector putting pressure on the government to keep dropping interest rates, instead of finding other methods of becoming more competitive and internationally attractive.. like subsidising perhaps.
20:51:30 Pooka Indeed
20:51:46 LordFear I'm only in here for a passing visit anyway, David Blaine is removing himself from his box tonight, and I wish to watch
20:52:23 KaM They drop interest rates, and .. what do you know.. mortgages.. house prices... and then the North/South divide getting ever larger by this as well. Tis the problem with a 'V' - more extreme the ammounts, the further the gap becomes.
20:53:07 KaM 40 mins. Hehe.. remember seeing him on Tower Bridge with Forester, Alex and Kieran. Took some photos and all, quite near the beginning.
20:54:10 LordFear I kept meaning to go and see it first hand, but never quite found the time
20:54:49 KaM So - Labour's strong economic policies to keep Britain under good monetary control are slipping, methinks, and need modifying. I can't see it happening, so might be a good thing for competetors to focus on.
20:55:12 KaM Must go and grab a bite.. then get on with this work o mine.
20:55:39 KaM Will leave the box open while I can. This laptop can't cope for too long without freezing if it gets too hot.
20:56:09 KaM So - may see you grand gentleman later.
20:56:15 KaM has left the room
20:56:16 *Forester KaM Hopefully next week I'll be as invisible as you seem to want
20:56:18 Pooka Byebye then!
